What is Eschatology?
Eschatology is the study of what will happen at the end of time
What does the bible teach about eschatology (the end of time)?
- The bible teaches that at the end of time there will be many frightening events such as stars falling from the sky
- It is also taught that Jesus will then return to earth to judge all humans
- The kingdom of God will also be established at the end of time
What do catholics today teach about eschatology?
- Catholics today teach that people have free will to accept or reject God, meaning that God does not send people to hell, they send themselves through their bad choices
- Catholics advice to do things such as: follow Jesus’ teachings, keep faith in God and do not commit serious sins in order to avoid being sent to hell
What is cosmic reconciliation?
The idea that at the end of time the whole of creation will be made perfect

What do catholics believe happens to the soul after death?
Catholics believe that when the body dies, the soul lives on and is judged by God in the afterlife
What are the 2 types of judgement that catholics will receive after death?
- Particular judgement
- Final judgement
What is particular judgement?
The judgement that catholics will receive immediately after death
What is final judgement?
The idea that at the end of time christ will judge all humans again
What is it like for people who are in heaven?
In heaven people exist in a state of eternal happiness and are in the presence of God
What is it like for people who are in hell?
In hell people exists in a state of anger and frustration at themselves and are eternally separated from God

True - No other denominations or religions believe in the purgatory
What is the purgatory?
- The purgatory is an area in which a cleansing process takes place after death in which sins are removed
- People will experience some pain in the purgatory, however if you are in the purgatory then you are guaranteed to enter heaven
What are 3 reasons supporting assisted dying (euthanasia)?
- It can quickly end a persons suffering and prevent any future suffering
- Everyone has the right to decide how/when they die
- It would help people face the idea of death if they know they can die in the way they want to (and not die a painful death)
What are 3 reasons against assisted dying (euthanasia)?
- Many pain-killing drugs can help the patient die pain-free without having to end life prematurely
- The sanctity of like states that life should be respected and preserved and that only God has the right to end someones life
- Someone must experience the trauma of assisting someone with their death
What is the catholic teaching on euthanasia (assisted dying)?
Catholic teaching is that euthanasia is murder and only God has the right to end someones life (sanctity of life)
What is the idea of bodily resurrection?
- Bodily resurrection is the idea that at the end of time Jesus will physically raise all those who have dies for judgement
- Those who are judged favourably will be given back the same body they lost at death, except this body will be in a perfect state

What are 5 things which we can observe and infer from ‘The Last Judgement’?
1) Mary has a look of calm whilst many others seem panicked - this shows that she is the perfect disciple
2) Everybody in the painting (apart from Mary and Jesus) are naked - this shows that all people are equal
3) Christ is the central figure of the painting - this shows that he is the judge of all
4) Christ has visible wounds showing on his body - this shows that he came to glory through obedience and suffering
5) People can be seen rising from their graves - this shows that the bodies of all people will be raised up on judgement day
What is a Paschal Candle?
A large candle with an important role in the Easter Vigil
What is an easter vigil?
An easter vigil is a service that takes place in darkness from late Saturday night to early Sunday Easter morning (in which people stay awake)
What are 3 key events that happen during an Easter Vigil?
- The Priest lights a fire (representing the light of christ rising from his tomb)
- The priest traces Alpha and Omega on the Paschal Candle (reminds people that christ is eternal)
- The priest inserts 5 grains of incense into the Paschal Candle (representing the 5 wounds of christ)
What is a memorial?
A memorial is a structure built to honour or respect a dead person
What are the 3 types of memorials?
- Tombstone
- Monument
- Remembrance Garden
