What is the triune God?
The christian belief that there are 3 persons in one God
What are the 3 key beliefs in the triune God?
- There is only one God, however within this one God there are three persons: The father, the son, the holy spirit
- All three persons are completely God (and not parts of God)
- All three persons are equal (but not the same)
What is repent?
Sorrow and regret for wrongdoings
What is one quote from the bible that proves there is only one God?
“The lord is one”
What did John the baptist tell people to do?
He told people that they must repent by doing something (such as getting baptised), rather than just saying they are repenting
What could the voice of God be heard saying when Jesus came up from the water after being baptised by John?
“This is my beloved son, in whom I am well pleased”
Why was Jesus’ baptism important?
- It was the beginning of the sacrament of baptism
- It shows all 3 of God’s persons (Father, son and holy spirit)
- It shows that the three persons are separate
What do catholics believe happens when you are submerged under the water during baptism?
Catholics believe it symbolises joining Jesus after death
What do catholics believe happens when you rise up from the water during baptism?
Catholics believe it symbolises joining in with Jesus’ resurrection and starting a new life
Why is baptism so important to catholics?
- The person becomes a member of the catholic church
- Original sin is cleansed
- The person joins in with Jesus’ death and resurrection
Why do the quakers reject all sacraments?
The quakers believe that sacraments are distractions that take focus away from God

What is apostolic authority?
The belief that Jesus gave his 12 apostles the authority to lead the catholic church
Why are catholics expected to take teachings from the magisterium very seriously?
- The authority has come from christ himself
- The magisterium is guided by God to make the correct teachings

It means the doctrine cannot be wrong

A statement by the magisterium that summarises key beliefs on God as the father, the son and the holy spirit

- “Make of heaven and earth” - God is creator
True or False: The nicene creed teaches that God is eternal?
True: The nicene creed teaches that God has always existed and has no beginning or end

- “The son is consubstantial with the Father” - The son and the father are made of the same nature and they are both eternal
- “He is seated at the right hand of the father” - Jesus is with God in heaven, just like we will be when we die

“The holy spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son” - The holy spirit was created by God and is shown through Jesus and unites the two together
What is the council of Constantinople?
After the council of Nicea (the nicene creed) there were still further disputes about the nature of the holy spirit, therefore a second council had to take place in Constantinople to settle these disputes
What were the 2 main teachings of the Council of Constantinople?
- Jesus is fully human and fully God
- The holy spirit is the third person of the Holy trinity
What does St Augustine teach us about the trinity?
St Augustine teaches that the holy spirit is the love that unites the father and the son,
and also that the trinity is three persons united in love
