When did Hitler become Chancellor?

When was the Reichstag fire and who was blamed for it?
27 Feb 1933
A young communist called Marinus van der Lubbe. He claimed he worked alone but many believed he was working as part of a larger Communist plot
What did Hitler persuade President Hindenburg to pass after the fire?
The emergency Reichstag fire decree. This severely restricted civil liberties
What was the consequences for the communist party due to the Reichstag fire decree?
400 Communists were arrested, including the leader of the party, Ernst Thalmann. The communist press and meetings were banned.
What did the SS and SA do to help gain votes in the March 5th election?
Patrolled the German streets intimidating voters to vote for the Nazis
What was the initial outcome of the 5th March election?
The Nazi’s didn’t get an outright majority. Only got 288 our of 647 seats.
Who did the Nazi’s form a coalition with and how many seats did they gain?
The Nationalists and it gave them 52 seats and the majority that they needed
What was the Enabling Act and when was it passed?
24th March 1933. It gave Hitler to pass any law he liked without the approval of the Reichstag.
What does Gleichschaltung mean?
Bringing into line
What was the Civil service act and when was it?
7 April 1933, any civil servant who was non-Aryan or a political opponent was fired
What was some examples of Antisemitism due to Gleichschaltung?
- Laws stopped Jewish people from working in any legal or medical professions
- on 1 April 1933, a countrywide boycott of Jewish businesses was held
What was the book burning?
In May 1933, Goebbels encouraged the burning of ‘un-german’ books
What was the impact of the increased use of the SA?
- Began to terrorise Nazi opponents (Jewish people or political opponents)
- By October 1933, 100,000 had been arrested and some were placed in new concentration camps
How did the Nazis remove the Trade unions?
- They arrested their main leaders
- their offices were raided and they were arrested
- a new workers organisation was created called the German Labour Front
How were other political parties removed?
- Democracy had been removed by the Enabling Act
- on 10 May, the Nazis said that the Social Democrats had used their funds corruptly and arrested 3000 people
- On 21 June they were banned altogether
- Seeing this, other political parties dissolved
- On 14th July, an act was passed to ban new parties
