Informed Consent
Every participant needs to be informed of the aims and objectives of the research and what it involves and they need to give their consent to participate. A consent statement usually includes:
- the study itself
- the researchers and supervisors
- the right to withdrawal from the study
- confidentiality and anonymity
- accessing results
Undue Physical or Psychological harm, discomfort or stress
Make sure no harm is done to participants.
Right to withdrawal
No matter the reason, participants always have the right to withdraw from a study and researchers cannot prevent them.
Confidentiality and Anonymity
No participant should be identifiable by name or any other distinguishing detail.
Confidentiality— information is private but is technically possible for a researcher to figure out a participants identity
Anonymity— impossible for anyone even the researcher to connect a participant with their data
Deception
Refers to misleading participants or misrepresenting their participation in some untrue way
Debriefing
When researcher is over, every effort must be made to return participants to their original state so that they are not changed in any lasting way by participating in the research
