What are ethics in psychology?
Ethics are the moral codes laid down by professionals to ensure standards and behaviours are adhered to.
Why were ethical guidelines introduced?
To protect the wellbeing, health and dignity of participants in research
What is in the BPS code of ethics?
Informed consent Confidentiality Deception Debrief Right to withdraw Protection from harm
What is informed consent?
Where researchers describe their research project and obtain the subjects permission to participate in the study
What is deception?
This is where participants are mislead or misinformed about the aims of the research
What is confidentiality?
Data gained from participants must be kept anonymous unless stated by the participant
What is a debrief?
A meeting that takes place after the research to inform the participants of the true aims of the study
What is your right to withdraw?
You can leave the study at any time during the experiment if you feel uncomfortable. You can also withdraw your data from the study
What is protection from harm?
You must be protected from pyshical and mental harm. The risk of harm must not exceed that of a daily amount in ordinary life
What should you include when writing a debrief?
Purpose of the study
How their data will be used
Information the participants are unaware of
Reminder of confidentiality and right to withdraw
Further support if need (counselling)
What is retrospective consent?
Retrospective consent is consent gained after the study
What is presumptive consent?
This is where you take a similar group of people to the participant and ask if they would give consent
What is prior-general consent?
This is general consent gained where you don’t give detail about the study
