Variables Flashcards
Learn all the different variables going into a study (13 cards)
What is an experiment?
It is a controlled condition in order to test the effects of the IV on the DV in the experimental condition
What is the independent variable?
This is the variable you change
What is a dependant variable?
This is what you measure
What is an operational variable?
Stating how you are going to measure the variables
What is an extraneous variable?
It is the other variables that affect the DV
What is “demand characteristics”?
This is when participants guess the aims of the study
How do you overcome “demand characteristics”?
The single-blind technique
What is the single-blind technique?
This is where you withhold the aims of the study from participants
What are “investigator effects”?
Ways researchers unconsciously influence the results of a study
How do you overcome “investigator effects”?
The double-blind technique
What is the double-blind technique?
This is where the researchers and the participants don’t know the true aims of the study
What are confounding variables?
They are extraneous variables that are identified after the studyp
What is a causal relationship?
When you find one variable affects another
