Ethnic Differences In Religiosity Flashcards
(8 cards)
Solidarity (davie)
Higher levels of religiosity help maintain tradition and community solidarity. This links to aspects of ethnic identity such as marriage and diet. This religious solidarity helps deal with the hostility from racism in the predominantly white uk
Evaluation of solidarity
Functionalists would agree with this as it ensures the smooth running of society and helps these EM communities survive
Social deprivation and marginalisation
EM feel like they are on the fringes of society and lack status which leads to a higher religiosity. Religion is like an opium of the people as it distracts these poor ethnic minorities from their poverty
Evaluation of social deprivation and marginalisation
Em religiosity may have more to do with social class as those who live in poverty in the uk are more likely to be religious than those who don’t
Religious socialisation
Family structures are a much tighter knit in Asian communities. This creates pressure to conform to religious values and behaviour
Evaluation of religious socialisation
Em religiosity is a cultural expectation and not a sign of increase religious beliefs - belonging without believing
Cultural tradition - Bruce
Religious eases ems transition into a new culture by providing a sense of community. Pentecostalism is the religion of the oppressed that provides migrants with values of the new world. Eg- Protestant ethic of self-relliance
Evaluation of cultural defence
Postmodernists would stage there is little need for cultural defence in postmodern uk society as ethnic and class differences are no longer relevant
