A
- hold black boys themselves responsible for their underachievement as it is their negative attitude to schools that are most used to blame in his opinion but he does recognise that negative teacher labelling doesn’t help
- Found out some black students were disciplined excessively by teachers who felt threatened by the students masculinity, sexuality, and physical prowess because they had been socialised into racist attitudes
- Found that many teachers had racial stereotyping black African Caribbean boys made of 32% of the population but comprised of 85% of exclusions
- He divided teachers into three groups; supportive teachers which made up 10% of the staff, irrigated teachers who made up 60% of the staff and antagonistic teachers which were 30% of the staff
- This lead to strained teacher and pupil relationships and boys formed subcultures as a response such as the innovators (pro education but anti school), the conformist (pro education), the retreatists (disconnected from both school and black subcultures) and the rebels (rejected both schools goals and rules)
