evaluation of the multistore model of memory Flashcards

Q

(2) supporting evidence

A
  • primacy and recency effect - Glanzer et al
when pps are given a lsit to recall in order they are able to recall the words better that are at the beginning as they have been transferred to long term memory and those at the end as they have been put into short term memory , the items in the middle are displace displaced because stm has a limited capacity
this demonstrates unitary stores for short term and LTM supporting the multi store model of memory

(2) Patient HM - involved in bike accident resulted in developing epilepsy his removed hippocampus.
He was able to form stm not new ltm provides further support for the MMM as it demonstrates separate stores for LTM and STM as repersented in the theoretical models

Q

Disadvantages of studies for the evidence of MMM (3)

A
  • Lack of mundane realism because of artifical tasks in labatory experiments.
    eg (Peterson and Peterson (1959)
this limits the extent to which these findings can be generalise beyond the labotary setting and can be questioned because its based on research that lacks ecological validity as memory in day to day life doesn’t entail recalling meaningless numbers, rather in context or items from a shopping list

Oversimplified view of long term memory as further research has shown that there are separate parts to ltm (procedural, episodic , semantic ) MMM lacks detail to explain the other parts to ltm lacks validity

Oversimplifies STM - Patient KF (damage to STM ) - verbal recall
when tested verbal to recall he would only remember 2 things on this list in contrast when stm was presented w visual info his recall was normal - this suggest STM may have further components for visual and verbal info
