multi store model part 2 Flashcards
(9 cards)
STM capacity
Jacobs 1887 digit span task
pps presented with 4, 5, digit numbers and asked to recall
miller summarised research and proposed the number 7+/- 2 items
more than 7 individual letters can be remembered by using a process called chunking
STM duration
Peterson and Peterson (1959)
counting backwards prevented rehearsal so less maintaince of stm
they found the longer the interval between the trigram and recall the less accurate recall
18-30 seconds
How is STM coded
STM is coded acoustically
Baddeley (1956)
What did Baddeley 1956 do + findings
Made groups 1-4
group 1 - acoustically similar
group 2 - acoustically dissimilar
group 3 - semantically similar
group 4 - semantically dismilar
Acoustically similar performed the worst suggesting that STM is encoded acoustically because when sounds presented overlap it causes acoustic confusion as stm only pays attention to the sound not the meaning
LTM encoding
Baddeley (1966)
same study but repeated list after twenty minutes testing long term memory
Group 3 - semantically similar list performed the worst (causing difficulty)
Long term memory is predominately encoded semantically , long term memory pays attention to meaning rather than sound
LTM Duration (1975)
Bahrick et al (1975)
High school students were shown the names and pictures of their classmates from high school year books, memory tasks wereperformed
Bahricks findings in relation to long term memory duraiton
Photo recognition within the last 15 years 90% accurate and only declined to 70% if graduated 48 years ago which illustrates that long term memories can last up to life time
LTM capacity
no research to date has been able to find a limit to long term memory capacity.
