Evolution Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is natural selection?
The core principle of evolution where organisms with better traits survive
What is genetic drift?
A process where random fluctuation of allele frequencies in a population’s gene pool over time
What is variation?
The differences that exist between individuals of the same species, or between different species
What is fitness?
Measured by amount of fertile offspring/descendents an organism has
What is differential reproduction?
Some individuals within a population leave more offspring than others
What is adaptation?
Species learn to live with a new environment
What are the five fingers of evolution?
Pinkie - population can shrink
Ring finger - non random mating
Middle - mutation
Pointer - gene flow
Thumb - natural selection
What are the three requirements for natural selection to occur?
- Variation
- The environment makes one variation more beneficial than another
- The allele of the favored variation with increase in the population over time
What are some different types of selective pressure?
Predation, physiological, and sexual
What is evolution?
A concept that has broad explanatory power supported by a vast body of evidence
