Evolution Flashcards
(16 cards)
Species
A group of Organisms that can interbreed to produce fertile offspring
Mutations
A change in the DNAs sequence
Random fertilisation
The random union of a sperm and egg during sexual reproduction
Natural selection
Organisms that are better adapted to suit their environment are more likely to survive to pass on their successful ganes
Evolution
the change in characteristics of a species over time due to natural selection
Selection pressure
Any environmental factors that influence natural selection
Fossil records
Collection of all fossils ever discovered documenting the history of life on Earth
Homologous structures
A trait or organ in different species that shares a common ancestry. They provide evidence of common ancestry. E.g Forearms of humans, bats and whales
Vestigial structures
Body parts or traits that have lost their original function through evolution.
Variation
differences in traits (characteristics) among individuals within a population of the same species.
Over population
Species reproduce but there are more offspring produced than the amount of resources available
Survival of the fittest
Organisms with favourable traits are more likely to survive and reproduce
Struggle to exist
The competition among species for limited resources
Inheritance of sucessful genes
Organisms that have survived to reproduce pass on successful genes to next generation
Change in gene frequencies
Changes in frequencies of alles over time
