Evolution Part 3: Natural Selection Flashcards
(8 cards)
How are mutations selected
Ideal mutations will be selected non randomly by natural pressures
Types of natural pressures
-Food source access
-Predator/prey relationships
-Reproduction ability
-New diseases arriving
-Environment changes
What organisms survive
Only the fittest
How the fittest reproduce
Make offspring with same traits
Requirements to see changes in population
-Random mutations must occur
-Mutations must be good for surviving
-Mutations must be able to be inherited to offspring
-Must happen in egg/sperm to be passed on
Types of natural selection 1.
Stabilizing selection:
Average of 2 extreme traits are selected
Types of natural selection 2.
Disruptive/diversify selection:
2 extremes of the traits are selected
Types of natural selection 3.
Directional selection:
1 extreme trait is selected
