Exam 1 Flashcards
(17 cards)
What’s the research question?
Guide research projects. Motivates and structures data and their collections.
Objectivity
Means that info. Is not influenced by personal feelings or opinions of anyone. Objective statements match what is out there regardless of how individuals feel
Generalizability
Information applies to someone other than those people or situations for which it was directly observed or produced. We ask ourselves “does this study’s findings tell us anything convincing about anyone other than the ppl who were studied?”
Falsifiability
Conclusions from a study can be refuted(proven wrong). The conclusion is stated Ina form that allows it to be challenged and evidence for the conclusion is presented in a way that can be scrutinized
What’s a good research question’s elements ?
Must be specific and falsifiable
- must focus on behavioral outcomes
- must stay away from values, beliefs and tastes of researchers
Unit of analysis
The type of case your are studying.
Example: individual, groups, organizations, or places
What are statements that link variables !
Hypotheses indicates a relationship among variables that explains some part of the variance in our dependent variable
The tattoo parlor study
2 graduate students Schar and Maize at DePaul University went to a tattoo parlor did an ethnographic study. Viewed how tattoo artist differentiated themselves from customers. Artists engage in “speech acts” that maintain a hierarchy of status where artist is above customer
Ethnography
Means writing about people. Involves immersing ones self into a particular culture or setting
Empirical inquiry
Information we can obtain through our five senses. Knowledge about the world around us
Research design
Overall plan for answering our research questions. It specifies research methods, activities and techniques that we will need in order to answer our question in a satisfactory way.
Research method
Recognized ways of collecting empirical information. Usually clusters of related research activities
Research techniques
Specific procedures for implementing research methods
Theory
The soul of a research project gives it a larger meaning.
Shows the knowledge gained in the research project
Grounded theory
Researcher should not go into fieldwork with a definite set of theories in mind but should let concepts and explanations emerge from careful observation
Unobtrusive vs obtrusive
Obtrusive research is when you interact with research subjects
Unobtrusive does not require interaction with research subjects or respondents
Field studies
When research views people engaged in their world and not answering to her demands and questions
