Faith in knowledge - scientific professors who had a strong faith in science and felt that you should apply the rules of natural and social sciences to society in order to maximize efficiency and modernize

A

This movement began because some believed that ignorance and poverty was a result of the environment not the person.

As waves of immigrants moved into poor neighborhoods a settlement house was created

Galveston Hurricane

A

This hurricane in 1900 wiped out the entire infrastructure of the city.

Government had the black bodies buried at sea but they turned up on the beach days later.

Due to the corruption at the time, the city got rid of the mayor and city council and elected commissioners and a city manager.

Triangle Shirtwaist Fire

A

They produced shirts in a large multistory buildings with women as the majority of the workers.

Managers felt the women weren’t producing as much as they should do they would lock the doors on the upper levels to keep the women from taking unnecessary breaks.

1911 a fire broke out on the 3rd floor but the women were trapped because all the exits were locked. 146 women died.

Became a rally cry for unions to improve conditions and demonstrated the power of the progressive movement in instituting change

Challenged modernists vs traditionalists. TN passed a law in 1925 banning the teaching of evolution. John scopes challenged this and taught evolution and went to trail. Attorney Clarence Darrow called special prosecutor William bryan as an expert witness on the Bible. Asked questions that forced Bryan to contradict himself and admit that there are multiple interpretations of the Bible Judge found Darrow breaking the law and scopes was also found guilty

Throughout the 1920's the traditional and urban democrats were fighting among themselves. This allowed the republicans to dominate. Republicans had strong ties with business Corruption, lack of imitation, and the economy tanked within a year of Hoover becoming president
