Alfred Thayer Mahan
Served as a superintendent at the US Naval Academy
Said that the US had to control both the Atlantic and Pacific in order to be considered unstoppable
First proponent in building a canal that connected the 2 oceans in order to move fleets back and forth easily
Seward’s Folly
US secretary William Seward signed a treaty with Russia to purchase Alaska for 7 million in 1867.
Most believed this was the biggest mistake
Monroe Doctrine
President James Monroe created this doctrine in 1823 opposing European colonialism in the US.
It initiated the mentality that the new world and old world were to remain separate spheres of influence.
“You stay on your side and I’ll stay on mine”
USS Maine
During the war with Spain, the USS Maine was docked in Havanah where it exploded one morning.
260 people were killed.
Most believed the Spanish blew it up but Historians actually believe it was due to a boiler.
Emilio Arguinaldo
He led the Philippine forces against Spain in the Philippine Revolution and the Spanish-American war.
Became the first president of the Philippines in 1899
Foraker Act
Gave Puerto Rico a voice in the American government.
Allowed them to send a non-voting delegate to the White House beginning in 1900.
This began the debate over citizenship which continues today
Types of Progressivism
Anti-monopoly - wanted distribution of wealth and allows for a level playing field and small businesses to survive
Social cohesion - welfare of a single person is welfare of all of society that say nobody is left out
Faith in knowledge - scientific professors who had a strong faith in science and felt that you should apply the rules of natural and social sciences to society in order to maximize efficiency and modernize
Settlement House
This movement began because some believed that ignorance and poverty was a result of the environment not the person.
As waves of immigrants moved into poor neighborhoods a settlement house was created
Hull house was the first settlement house, ran by young white women, and became a model for over 40” settlement houses
Galveston Hurricane
This hurricane in 1900 wiped out the entire infrastructure of the city.
Government had the black bodies buried at sea but they turned up on the beach days later.
Due to the corruption at the time, the city got rid of the mayor and city council and elected commissioners and a city manager.
Muckrakers
During the spread of progressivism more people took up journalism
Used their writing to direct people’s attention to the social, political, and economic injustices that were happening around the world.
Triangle Shirtwaist Fire
They produced shirts in a large multistory buildings with women as the majority of the workers.
Managers felt the women weren’t producing as much as they should do they would lock the doors on the upper levels to keep the women from taking unnecessary breaks.
1911 a fire broke out on the 3rd floor but the women were trapped because all the exits were locked. 146 women died.
Became a rally cry for unions to improve conditions and demonstrated the power of the progressive movement in instituting change
WEB Dubois
First African American to receive a Ph.D at Harvard.
Challenged the ideas of Booker T Washington
Wrote a book called the souls of black folk where he dismantled the Washington argument and principle of the Atlanta compromise.
Instead he pushed for equal access to education for blacks

Shifted the public opinion in the US against Germany and was a main factor in the United States declaration of war two years later.
Zimmerman Telegram
Was a secret diplomatic communication issued from the German Foreign Office in January 1917 that proposed a military alliance between Germany and Mexico in the event of the US entering World War I
Blackjack Pershing
General of the Armies and Commander of the American Expeditionary Force during WWI.
He rejected British and French demands to integrate armies and insisted that they operate as a single unit under his command
Defeated the central powers in 1918
Wilson’s 14 Points
Woodrow Wilson created a statement of principles for peace that was to be used for peace negotiations in order to end WWI.
Included a set of diplomatic and territorial points
Served as the basis for the final negotiations at the end of WWI
League of Nations
Was an international organization, in Switzerland created in 1920 after the First World War to provide a forum for resolving international disputes
Intention of the organization was to maintain world peace and prevent future world wars.
Failed after 26 years at the onset of WWII
Treaty of Versailles
Most important of the peace treaties that brought WWI to an end.
Treaty ended the state of war between Germany and the allied powers.
Signed in 1919
Henry Cabot Lodge
Republican senator and first senate majority leader during WWI.
Demanded congressional control of declarations of war
Disagreed with wilsons 14 points and felt that Germany needed to be militarily and economically crushed with harsh penalties
Aimee Semple McPherson
Spent three years cross-crossing Cali before settling in San Diego .
Came with a mission to spread the gospel and get American to change their ways.
Believed she was able to channel power and heal people
Opened mega church in 1923 that cost 1.5 million and had 5000 seats
Welfare Capitalism
During the New Era it provided certain benefits to employees to make them happier.

Raised wages, paid vacations, health insurance, reduced union strikes
