Q

bureaucratic authority vs. Charismatic authority

A

Bureaucratic: with bureaucratic authority people are appointed based on their qualifications. There are fixed positions and salaries, yet you still have the ability to move up the ladder. There is an everyday routine that is followed. Loyalty lies with the position, not the person in the position. We are loyal to the presidency, not the president, because we honor whoever the current person in office is. People with bureaucratic authority would be like the people in government.

Charismatic: this authority is based on magical or heroic characteristics that a person has. these people arent in office, and they had to prove their worthiness. An example would be a famous singer. They don’t hold a position in office, plus they have an amazing talent and had to prove that to the world.

Q

status vs. class

A

Class: not communities, rather categories of a persons position in the economic order. Ex: property owner/property less, capitalist/wage worker, skilled laborer/unskilled laborer

status group: a group that shares some traits and social proximity. The status of your group can have high or low social honor. Status is not determined by economics, like class is. It is also possible for a status group to evolve into a closed system where there is no movement within the status groups

Q

Value rational vs. instrumental rational

A

value rational: Doing something that leads to a valued goal. Doesn’t have as much to do with money. there is less emphasis on means to achieve the goal. Some examples would be going to college b/c you value learning rather than going to get a job that pays well, being vegetarian b/c you don’t believe in killing animals rather than doing it to lose weight, volunteering b/c you want to help people rather than doing it so your resume looks good.

Instrumental rational: doing something with a lot of attention and planning to achieve and end. this is seen a lot in our everyday lives, like in corporations, government, and education. Examples would be marrying a wealthy person for financial stability, or joining military to get a free education. It is more about profit making and maximizing exchange values, while value rational is more about personal values.
