Q

Anomie

A
Anomie is when people become normless and aimless, particularly because of rapid change. It is the lack of social regulation and the breakdown of moral regulation. This breakdown of norms leaves people confused and can lead to deviant behaviors. Also since all of these normless people are trying to find some kind of social/moral regulation, subgroups of people can be created (like gangs, or other small groups of like minded people)
Examples of Anomie
1. Going from high school, a place where you are socially integrated, to college. You suddenly have a ton of freedom and a whole new life to start, so norms are drastically changed which can be difficult.
2. Being poor and then winning the lottery, you had so many limits set, but now you can do whatever you want and you end up in a whole new class of people that you never have been in before. It's a huge change.

Q

Egoism

A

The lack of integration among an individual and a social group. It is a disconnect with social cohesion and deviant behaviors can arise from this. Egoism basically isolates people.
Ex: Coming out of jail and trying to reintegrate into society, but not being accepted by people for their past, so they end up back in jail where they were socially integrated and had some moral and social regulation.
(Could also work for anomie because you have rules and regulations in jail, then when you get out you are starting new and have a ton of freedoms, so norms are completely changed and person may feel lost)
Ex: Being a freshman in college and being denied from joining sororities/frats, or clubs, so you feel isolated.

Q

Mechanical solidarity

A

Durkheim said that we went from mechanical solidarity to organic solidarity. Mechanical solidarity is traditional society, there is a collective conscience. With this people are dependent on common rituals and routines. Social cohesion was based on similarities between the people. Examples would be the way prehistoric societies ran. With mechanical there is repressive law (like which involves physical punishment and is often public to send a message)

Q

Organic solidarity

A

This is modern society and it is common with industrial societies and really emphasizes increased in division of labor. This society is individualistic and there is interdependence, so people are dependent on others to perform specific tasks (like we are dependent on dentists for our teeth, and doctors for our health) with organic there is constitutive law (involves fines and is located in social institutions like courts)
