Exam 3 Organisms & Blood typing Flashcards
(17 cards)
What is this organism? What is important about it? (4)
12-1: Fungi
Candida albicans is a yeast
- Can cause yeast infection and Thrush
- May result in endocarditis (heart swelling)
- Can be a part of normal flora
- Reproduce via asymetrical budding
What is this organism? What is important about it? (4)
12-1: Fungi
Rhizopus stolonifer mold
- Black Bread Mold
- Can reproduce asexually (sporangiospore) or sexually (zygospore)
- Rhyzoids (root clusters) give it away
- Grows like cotton with pepper
What is this organism? What is important about it? (5)
Penicillium notatum mold
- Used to make penicillin but can infect lungs of immunocompromised
- Make blue and brie cheese
- Grows green spores and white hyphae
- Looks like brush/broom
- Grows conidiospores on conidiophores
What is this organism? What is important about it? (5)
Aspergillus niger mold
- Most common mold (walls)
- Causes lung infection
- Used to make soy products
- Grows conidiospores on conidiophore
What is dioecious? What is monoecious?
Dioecious - Male reproductive organisms in one and female reproductive organs in another organism
Monoecious - Hermaphroditic animals have both male and female reproductive organs
What is this organism? What is important about it? (4)
Enterobius vermicularis - nematode
- Causes pinworm
- Eggs laid in perianal region
- Diagnosis via cellaphane tape
- Fecal oral contamination
Note one side of egg is more flat
What is this organism? What is important about it? (4)
Ascaris lumbaricoides - nematode
- Most common helminth infection in the world
- Fecal oral contamination
- Adults enter intestines and make their way into the lungs and can cause pneumonia
- Cause intestinal blockage
Notice bumpy surface
What is this organism? What is important about it? (4)
Necator americanus - nematode
- Causes Hook worm
- Occurs when a larva penetrates the skin of the foot
- Lives in intestines and absorbs blood and can cause anemia
- Eggs in feces are excreted and can reach dirt to infect another person
Notice smooth surface and hooked tail
What is this organism? What is important about it? (5)
Taenia solium/saginata (pork/beef) - cestode
- Causes worm in brain, muscle, or eye that acts as tumor
- Cysticercosis
- Monoecious
- Adult grows in large intestine
- Lifestock eat contaminated vegitation
Notice spokes and adult
What is this organism? What is important about it? (4)
Schistosoma mansoni - trematode
- Eggs are excreted and snail is the host
- Cercariae stage penetrates skin and mature in intestinal blood vessels
__________________________ is a general term applied to any agglutination test in which the clumping of red blood cells indicates a positive reaction.
11-5 Blood typing
Hemeagglutination
If a person has an A antigen on their RBC, they are type _______ blood and they produce ____________ antibodies.
11-5 Blood typing
A
B
What antigen is expressed on type B blood cells? What antibodies does a person produce if they are type B blood?
11-5 Blood typing
- B antigen
- A antibodies
If an individual lacks BOTH the A and B antigen on their RBC, what blood type are they? What antibodies will that
person produce?
11-5 Blood typing
-O
- Will produce A and B antibodies
If you perform an agglutination with anti-A antiserum and you see agglutination, and then with type-B anti-serum
and you don’t see agglutination, what blood type is the person?
11-5 Blood typing
Type A
If you get agglutination after adding the anti-Rh antiserum, is the person Rh positive or negative?
11-5 Blood typing
Rh +
What blood type is the universal donor, including the Rh factor? What blood type is the universal recipient, including the Rh factor?
11-5 Blood typing
Universal donor: O-
Universal recipient: AB+
