Exam101 Flashcards
(25 cards)
Electrolysis
The process of using electricity to break the compound water into Hydrogen and Oxygen
Electrolyte
A liquid or gel that contains ions and can be decomposed by electrolysis that present in a battery. (Not important definition)
Used to speed up process of splitting water into H and O because water is a poor conductor of electricity
Alloy
A metal made by combining two or more metallic elements
Mixture of Metals
Melting Point
The temperature at which a given solid will melt.
Ice = 0 degrees Celsius
Boiling Point
The temperature at which a liquid boils and turns to vapor.
Water = 100 degrees Celsius
Increase
To become greater in temperature or mass
Decrease
To become lesser in temperature or mass
Element
A substance made up of one atom
Compound
A substance made up of two or more atoms
Atom
The basic unit of a chemical element
Atomic number
Tells how many protons (+) and electrons (-) are in that element’s atom
Atomic Mass
Tells how many protons (+) plus neutrons are in an element
Period
Horizontal Row - Tells us number of Electron Shells
Group
Vertical Column - Number of Valence Electrons is in the one’s digit at the group number
Valence Electron
The number of electrons in the outer most (last) energy level (shell) of an element
Metal
Solids, good conductors, some are magnetic, most are shiny, can be made into wires (ductile), or hammered into sheets (malleable)
Nonmetal
Usually liquid or gas, do not conduct electricity, not magnetic, dull, brittle, not ductile or malleable
Metalloid
In between metal and nonmetal.
Have properties of both metals and nonmetals.
Reactivity
Likelihood of bonding to form compounds
Radioactivity
Unstable
Reactant
A substance that takes part in and undergoes change during a reaction
H2 + O = H2O
H2 + O
Reactants
Product
A substance that takes part in and undergoes change during a reaction
H2 + O = H2O
H2O
Product
Proton
Positive charge found in the nucleus of an atom
(Center)
Neutron
Positive charge found in the nucleus of an atom
(Center)
