Experiment 2 Flashcards
(11 cards)
Calorimetry
The science of measuring heat changes that occur in chemical or physical processes.
Calorimeter
A device used for measuring the change in temperature.
q
The heat of reaction (released or absorbed).
ΔH
The enthalpy change.
s
The specific heat of a substance (the heat necessary to raise the temperature of one gram of a substance by one degree).
C
The total heat capacity of the object (s x m).
The Heat Capacity of the Calorimeter
The amount of heat required to raise the temperature of the calorimeter itself by 1 degree.
Measuring Heat Capacity of the Calorimeter
Determined by adding a known mass of hot water to a known mass of cold water or vice versa. The calorimeter is either going to gain or lose heat.
Determining the Specific Heat of a Metal
Determined by heating a sample of the metal to a known temperature and then placing it into a calorimeter containing a known amount of cool water.
qneut
The heat of neutralization.
Experiment 2 Summary
1) Add a known amount of NaOH pellets to a known amount of dH2O in the calorimeter and record the temperature for 25 minutes.
2) Add a known amount of cool dH2O to a known amount of hot dH2O and record the temperature for 10 minutes.
3) Combine a known amount of HCl to a known amount of NaOH and record the temperature for 10 minutes.
