experimental approaches Flashcards
(9 cards)
transcranial magnetic stimulation TMS
inactivating part of the brain for a short amount of time without being intrusive. it looks at function of a specific region
CT scan
uses XRAYS to show structure of brain- takes a picture. downside is that it doesn’t measure function and the picture isn’t that great
MRI
uses magnetic fields to take picture, resolution better than CT scan. looks at STRUCTURE better than CT. gives more detail and can see SOFT TISSUE
PET
uses GAMMA RAYS. positrons slam into electrons. can see RECEPTORS OR PROTEINS in the brain. shows STRUCTURE AT CELLULAR LEVEL
DTI
uses MAGNETS to look at DIFFUSION OF WATER, CAN LOOK AT AXONS/ white matter tracts or connections in the brain. different colors refer to density of fibers
4 types of imaging that looks at structural components
CT, MRI, PET, DTI
describe 2 techniques for function of electrical activity in animals/humans
EEG- inserting electrodes to pick up electrical activity of cortext cap.
FmRI- functional- shows function and what part of brain is active. look at blood flow to direct function of certain regions. the more active the more blood flow.
histology
can look at specific proteins. similar to PET in humans. looks at neurotransmitters
microdialysis
implant to brain of animals to take fluid out. can look at neurotransmitters in brain. in humans we use PET
