Inus condition

Insufficient but non-redundant part of an unnecessary but sufficient condition. Insufficient because it alone is not cause. Non-redundant if it adds something unique from other factors in constellation. Part of a sufficient condition if all factors present. Unnecessary if other sets of conditions can produce result. Most "causes" are actually inus conditions.

"in-our-hands" phenomenon

It works though we don't know which factors are important yet.

Something contrary to fact. In experiment, what happened to those receiving treatment in comparison to if they had not. Difference between is effect.
