this was needed to fuel trains for example which moved weapons and soldures to the western front when they were needed
coal mines were brought under government control in scotland to increase production and new technology and working methods supported this. under the military service act 1915, coal miners could not volunteer for military service

sandbags were made using jute to line trenches in an atempt to provent bullets hitting soldures - dundee mills were producing 6 million sandbags a month

all yards stopped work on merchant vessels and converted them into war ships. passenger liners were converted into troop carriers immediately after the outbreak of war. between 1914-1918 481 war ships were built on the clyde
