Exploring Cells Flashcards
(6 cards)
State the three tenets of cell theory.
- All organisms are composed of cells.
- The cell is the basic unit of structure and organisation in organisms.
- All cells come from pre-existing cells.
Explain how you would differentiate between a prokaryotic cell and a eukaryotic cell if you were looking down a microscope at a prepared slide.
To differentiate between a prokaryotic and a eukaryotic cell under a microscope, Prokaryotic cells are smaller, have no nucleus, and their DNA is spread out in the cell (in a nucleoid). Eukaryotic cells are larger, have a defined nucleus that holds their DNA, and have other organelles like mitochondria. So basically if you see a nucleus, it’s a eukaryote; if not, it’s a prokaryote
Where is DNA found in a eukaryotic cell?
In the nucleus
Where is DNA found in a prokaryotic cell?
Free floating in the cell
