Photosynthesis Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is photosynthesis?
Photosynthesis is a chemical process that uses sunlight to convert carbon dioxide and water into oxygen and food.
Where does photosynthesis occur?
The site of photosynthesis is in the chloroplast.
What are chloroplasts and where are they found?
Chloroplasts are organelles used in photosynthesis.
Chloroplasts are found in the green leaves of plants.
What are the two main functions of chloroplasts?
Produce food (glucose)
Store energy
Why do most leaves appear green?
Contain chlorophyll which absorbs all colours except green (reflects green light).
What is the primary pigment found in the chloroplast?
Chlorophyll
What three things (inputs) are used to make glucose in photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide, water and sunlight
Where does the water come from?
The soil
Where does the water enter the plant?
The roots
Name 3 sources of carbon dioxide (CO2).
Breath (exhaled), factory smokestacks, car fumes
What type of energy does the plant use to convert CO2 and H2O into sugar?
The plant uses light energy from the sun to convert CO2 and H2O into sugar.
What is produced in photosynthesis?
Glucose and oxygen
