46
Hazard
A Hazard is something with the potential to cause harm | Eg. Using a ladder creates a hazard through the potential of the individual falling.
47
Types of Hazard
``` Physical Chemical Biological Ergonomic Psychological ```
48
Examples of Physical Hazards
- electricity - work at height - radiation - vibration - noise - heat - trip hazards - moving machine parts - vehicles
49
Examples of Chemical Hazards
- gases - liquid - solids - dusts - lead - mercury - sulphuric acid - silica - cement dust
50
Examples of Biological Hazards
- bacteria - viruses - moulds, fungi & spores - hepatitis B virus - legionella bacteria - rabies virus
51
Examples of Ergonomic Hazards
- frequent repetitive handling of small boxes leading to inflammation - stooping, twisting - manual handling
52
Examples of Psychological Hazards
- exposure to highly traumatic events (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD) - bullying & harassment - unrealistic time-scales - risk of violence
53
Risk
A risk is the likelihood that a hazard will cause harm in combination with the severity of injury, damage or loss that might foreseeable occur
54
Risk Assessment
The formalised process of identifying hazards, evaluating the risk that they generate and then either eliminating or controlling the risk to an acceptable level Eg. An untrained person operating a forklift creates a risk through the likelihood of an accident occurring due to lack of training and familiarity with the equipment, of which the severity could be great.
55
Safe systems of work (SSW)
A safe system of work is a formal procedure based on a systematic examination of the work in order to identify the hazards. It defines safe methods of working which eliminate those hazards or minimise the risks associated with them
56
SSW - 3 key elements
Formal - documented Systematic examination of work in order to identify the hazards Defines safe methods - Analyse task, identify hazards and assess the risks - Introduce controls and formulate procedures - Instruct and train personnel in the use of the system - Monitor and review the system
