Eye exam... all about the retina-^- Flashcards
(20 cards)
what is optic atrophy? what are the causes?
-death of nerve fibers and loss of tiny disc vessels
-glaucoma
-brain injury
what is papilledema (choked disc)
-bilateral swelling of the optic disc caused by increased intracranial pressure
–> disc elevates + gets red –> cup no longer visible
what is glaucomatous cupping?
-increased pressure w/in eye leading to a backward depression
-aka the optic disc gets sucks back towards the brain
–> cup is enlarged so the retinal vessels can sink under it
what retina changes would you “see” w/ long-term diabetes mellitus?
-diabetic retinopathy
-microaneurysms
-neovascularization
-soft+hard exudates
-edema
what is the hallmark of the beginning of diabetic retinopathy?
TEST Q
microaneurysms
-tiny, round, red spots in and around the macular area
what conditions would cause neovascularization (4)
-diabetes
-sickle cell anemia
-sarcoidosis
-vascular occlusions
what is proliferative diabetic retinopathy
basically the same as the regular kind but you may see bands of white, fibrous tissue too
what are cotton wool patches (soft exudates)
-superfical, white/pale-yellow/grayish lesions with ill-defined edges
what are hard exudates
what are some causes for cotton wool patches (soft exudates)
-hypertension
-diabetes mellitus
-papilledema
-systemic lupus
-subacute bacterial endocarditis
what are some causes for hard exudates?
-vascular leakage from damaged capillaries –> increased permeability allowing fluid + lipoproteins to leak into retina
-hypertension
-diabetes mellitus
she’s probably going to have a pic or question about the difference b/w hard and soft exudates
they’re basically the same thing but soft exudates look fuzzier on an image and they are associated with more conditions
what are drusens
macula damage –> leads to vision loss
-small, discrete yellow spots around macula
what causes drusens
-aging
-sun exposure
-heredity
-malnutrition
what is a coloboma?
-developmental abnormality where there is a gap in any structure of the eye –> usually iris
-no vision problems unless it is on the retina
name for: inflammation of the retina and choroid layer of the eye
chorioretinitis
what causes chorioretinitis?
-toxoplasmosis
-AIDS
-congential/viral/bacterial/protozoan infections
-tumors
what type of chorroretinitis is caused by toxoplasmosis
-necrotizing retinochoroiditis
… no clue why the word roots are flipped it’s legit the same thing + necrosis
what is cytomegalovirus?
-viral infection of the retina leading to inflammation –> and blindness if untreated
-affects t cell function
what are the 3 vein changes seen with hypertension
tapering
a-v nicking
