EZIO - Indications (3)

A

Emergency vascular access in critically ill/injured patients where other methods are impossible within appropriate time frame:
- ie. 2x failed IVC attempts, or access not established within 2 minutes of first attempt
- Route of choice in: a) shock b) paediatric c) severe burns
- authorised sites are proximal/distal tibia. Proximal humerus may only be used in major abdominal, pelvic or lower limb trauma (a VCP must be submitted in this instance)

EZIO - Contraindications (6)

A
  1. Fracture of the targetted bone
  2. Previous IO attempts which penetrated cortex of that bone
  3. Infected skin overlaying insertion site
  4. Inability to locate landmarks at insertion site
  5. Prosthesis/previous orthopaedic procedures near insertion site
  6. Sternum is a big no no

Limb must be labelled with a bracelet (successful and unsuccessful attempts)
