F, Lec (plesiomonas20) Flashcards
(16 cards)
Plesiomonas are
oxidase-positive, glucose-
fermenting, facultatively anaerobic, gram-negative bacilli
Plesiomonas are motile by
Polar flagella
Plesiomonas is actually closely related to members
of the
family Enterobacteriaceae.
the only species in this genus.
P. shigelloides
shigelloides is found in
soil and aquatic environments,
Gastroenteritis transmission
ingestion of contaminated water or
food
three major clinical types of gastroenteritis are
caused by Plesiomonas
•The more common watery or secretory diarrhea
•A subacute or chronic disease that lasts from 14 days to 2 to
3 months
•A more invasive, dysenteric form that resembles colitis
On average, 25% to 40% of all patients present with fever,
vomiting, or both, and the single most common clinical symptom
for all such patients is abdominal pain. Most cases are self-
limiting, but antimicrobial therapy is indicated in severe and
prolonged cases. Reports of P. shigelloides infection in patients
with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections are
increasing, as are associations with inflammatory bowel disease.
More serious infections
bacteremia and meningitis
share biochemical and antigenic fea-
tures,
Plesiomonas and Shigella
motile by
monotrichous or two to five lophotrichous flagella
Pleisomanads do not form
Spores or capsules
General charac of plesiomonads
straight (0.8 to 1 µm by 3 µm), gram-negative
bacilli that occur singly, in pairs, or in short chains or filamentous
forms.
Plesiomonas on culture looks like
shiny, opaque, nonhemolytic colonies appear, with a slightly
raised center and a smooth and entire edge.
Does plesiomonas ferment lactose
Yes, but delayed
enhance the isolation of
plesiomonads
inositol brilliant green bile agar
Will grow on _____ but not on ______
TCBS, CIN
