factors effecting obedience individual factors Flashcards

authoritarian personality
Adorno 1950
high levels of obedience and prejudice is called authoritarian personality
harsh parenting style lead to children to develop personality traits such as toughness , destructiveness, cynicism measured this train with F-scale (fascism)
explaining many German adults high level of obedience to authority came from this parenting style
children who received unconditional love and and permissive parenting style would score low on the F-scale and are more likely to be resistant to what they perceive to be destructive orders.
internal and external locus of control
rotter 1966 proposed the ideology that people who lean towards internal locus control take greater responsibility for their actions , bc they believe they’re in control of their actions
people of external locus of control take less resposibility for their actions bc they believe what happens to them is governed by others.
internal = less obedient
external = more obedient
women are more obedient than men
Charles and Richard 1972
ordered participants to shock electric shots to a live puppy
100% women were obedient
54% of males were obedient
women were sobbing and gave distress during the study
men are more obedient than women
Killham and Mann 1974
replicated mailgrams study in Australia and found a shocking 28% of obedience and in gender
40%men= obedient
16%women= obedient
moral reasoning
Giligan 1982
decision making in men and women differ because men and women have differing principles in their ethics .
men = ethics of justice values of equality and fairness that requires a detached outlook avoiding bias
females = ethics of care to guide their decision making this principle relates to interpersonal relationships and nurturing and supporting those in need
applied to destructive obedience - males more obedient due to their feelings of obligation to an authority figure where as women may be less obedient due to their desire
a strength for authoritarian personality
Elms and Stanley
used the F-scale for mailgrams studies testing 20 fully obedient participants and 20 who were not obedient participants scored higher on the f-scale
a counter argument for internal LOC
Schurz 1985
Austrian participants were instructed to give painful doses of ultrasound to a female student.
the differences between obedient and not obedient scores on questionaries was not of high significance difference when measure locus of control.
application of LOC
Jobs that require higher levels of obedience for structured organisation might make apart of the recruitment process taking LOC quiz to make the matching more successful.
evaluating men and women obedience
and counterarguing it
Gilligan and Antannuci - 1988 interviewed real life moral dilemmas men favoured ethics of justice and women favoured ethics of care.
however Thomas Blass 1999 summarised Milgram’s studies that included both men and women and didn’t find any significant deference between the levels of obedience in genders.
