What are direct policies that influence the family?
Marriage, divorce, protection of children against abuse, adoption/fostering
What are indirect laws that affect the family?
Eductaion laws, employment laws, policies on housing, health and transport
How did more generous maternity and paternity pay and leave change the family?
Supports the idea that both parents likely to work, increasing roles many fathers play in children life, better primary socialisation to spend more time with children when they are young.
What law allowed same sex couples to adopt?
Adoption and children act 2002 , Civil partnership act 2005
How did the civil partnership affect families?
Same sex couples more likely to have children, different family structures, new right would criticise this leads to inadequate socialisation either missing male authority figure in life or missing out on a motherly figure.
How does childhood vary?
According to gender, geographical location, historically and culturally relative

Childhood is a recent social invention, in pre industrial society children were viewed as little adults,economic asset, 20th century “the century of the child”

Childhood is protected, separate from adulthood, children need socialising before responsibility of adult society, childhood percieved as golden age, happiness and innocent

Children have the same technologies as adults, child centered society, childs needs and wants a priority, weekend activites and holidays based on children, own media toys tv channels specialist foods and drinks and salons, moving to catchment areas, child based charities eg childline

“Death of childhood” , loss of innocence debate, social media exposed to violent sexual images too young, boundries between adult and child weakened
What are consequences on the death of childhood?
Not emotionally mature to cope with adulthood, increase of social problens eg teenage suicide, eating disorders, depression in children

Electric technologies have resulted in toxic childhood, parents use technologies to parent, loss of control of children ‘pester power’, cash rich rich time poor, parents dont have time to parent= inadequate socialisation

The family is now symmetrical as women go out to work, men do more domestic work

Weakened gender identities fexibility/ blurred thus weakening gender divisions in the home role reversal, no longer stereotypical

Growing equality due to increase in paid employment. However, tasks are still divided
