Features of new media Flashcards
(6 cards)
Technological convergence
A single device can be used to view different formats of media –> blurring of traditional & entertainment.
= Leads to cultural convergence: Jenkins –> The way the new media uses interact with others, and the way they interact with the media.
Digitality
‘Using computers’ –> binary code conversions allows for the storing of content
Interactivity
Producers and consumers now interact, consumers can create content
1.) Participatory culture: New media content relies on the audiences active participation –> Consumers can create content, producers can receive it, then can create more content on the suggestions
2.) Collective culture: Shared intelligence –> communicate with other people allowing for ideas to be shared, new media is a collective process, which Jenkins suggests is a new media power
Hypertextuality
Links which form a web of connections to other bits of information
–> way of searching, interacting with and customising the media for their own use
Dispersal
New media is less centralised and is more adapted to the individual
–> growth of media products
–> growth of media content
