Feedback Flashcards
(18 cards)
Intrinsic
Feedback from proprioreceptors about the feel of a movement.
eg. football player can feel when striking a ball if it has come off the right part of their foot or not
Intrinsic Pros
Strengthens SR Bond and corrects errors
Autonomous performers can us it to perfect the fluency of their movements
Intrinsic Cons
Not always useful for cognitive and associative performers
Extrinsic
Feedback from external sources
eg. tennis coach telling a learner if their serving technique is correct/incorrect
Extrinsic Pros
Strengthens SR Bond and corrects errors
Can motivate learners
Helps cognitive and associative learners understand how to improve
Extrinsic Cons
Can become dependent on it
Lack of kinaesthesis development
Positive
Received when movement, behaviour or action is correct
eg. coach praises hockey player for scoring a goal
Positive Pros
Strengthens SR Bond
Increased motivation and confidence
Motivates cognitive and associative learners
Increased likelihood of correct action being repeated
Positive Cons
Too much can distort players perception of their own performance
Negative
Received when movement is incorrect
eg. striker slices a shot, they see the ball go wide, their coach tells them to take a touch before shooting
Negative Pros
Aids fault correction
Can be extrinsic or intrinsic
Autonomous performers can use it to perfect skills
Negative Cons
Can discourage cognitive and associative learners
Knowledge of Peformance
Feedback on the quality of movement
eg. football coach explaining that a skied shot was due to leaning back too much
KoP Pros
Corrects faults and develops skills
Can be extrinsic or intrinsic
Can detect your own errors
KoP Cons
Only autonomous performers can use it to good effect
Knowledge of Results
Feedback about the outcome of a skill
eg. sprinting coach telling a sprinter their 100m times
KoR Pros
Helps to learn skills and motivate performers
Helps to develop KoP
Essential to skill learning
KoR Cons
Doesn’t give understanding as to why incorrect performance of a skill is wrong
Seeing negative results can be demotivating
