Skill Classification Flashcards
(13 cards)
Gross Skills
Muscular Involvement Continuum
Large muscle movements
Associated with power, strength and endurance
eg. hammer throw, weightlifting
Fine Skills
Muscular Involvement Continuum
Muscular involvement continuum
Small, intricate muscle movements
Associated with control, accuracy and the speed and direction of skills
eg. darts throw, wrist flick when shooting in basketball
Open Skills
Environmental Influence Continuum
Affected by the environment
Different each time it’s performed
Perceptual and are interpreted and adapted to differently each time
Externally paced in an unpredictable environment
eg. receiving a tennis serve
Closed Skills
Environmental Influence Continuum
Not affected by the environment
Performed in the same way each time, becomes habitual
Pre-determined and self paced
eg. basketball free throw
Discrete Skills
Continuity Continuum
Have a clear beginning and end
Skill must be started over again in order to be repeated
eg. penalty kick in football
Serial Skills
Continuity Continuum
When a number of discrete skills are put together to form a whole action
Usually have a set order to be performed in
eg. triple jump, gymnastics routines
Continuous Skills
Continuity Continuum
Don’t have a clear start and end
End of one cycle is the start of the next one
Movement of the skill has to be repeated multiple times to make it meaningful
eg. running, swimming
Self-Paced Skills
Pacing Continuum
Controlled by the performer
Decide when to begin and what speed the action will be performed at
Normally closed skills
eg. javelin, diving
Externally Paced Skills
Pacing Continuum
Environment controls the pace of the skill
Performer commences skill in response to an outside influence
Are open skills
eg. receiving a pass in football
Simple Skills
Difficulty Continuum
Little information to process
Few decisions to make
Small number of sub-routines
eg. sprinting
Complex Skills
Difficulty Continuum
Require high concentration
High level of cognitive involvement
High perceptual load
Many decisions have to be made
Lots of sub-routines
eg. somersault in trampolining
Low Organisational Skills
Organisatonal Continuum
Made up of easily separated sub-routines that can be practiced by themselves
eg. swimming strokes
High Organisational Skills
Organisational Continuum
Can’t be easily broken up into sub-routines
Generally taught as a whole skill
eg. golf swing, cartwheel in gymnastics
