FINAL EXAM - Growth & Reproduction Flashcards
(9 cards)
Antotrophs
Organisms that can synthesize their own food from inorganic sources
Gross Primary Production
Total amount of chemical energy produced in a given area & time period
Cellular Respiration
Takes energy just to stay alive
- Primary producers have to use chemical energy to fuel cellular respiration to produce the energy currency, ATP, which in turn, is used to fuel a diverse array of metabolic processes
Growth & Reproduction
- Chemical energy that isn’t used for cellular respiration can be applied to growth & reproduction
Net Primary Productivity
Energy that is invested by primary producers in building new tissue or offspring
Biomass
The total amount of chemical energy that is stored in organic material
Food Chain
Focuses one possible pathway of energy flow among trophic levels in an ecosystem
Food Webb
A way to summarize energy flows and document the complex trophic interactions that occur in ecosystems
Biomagnification
Increase in concentration in consumers at higher levels in a food chain
