Flashcards in Final preparation Deck (14):
1

Hughings Jackson

Neurologist around 1900, studied epilepsy

2

Korsakoff Syndrome

Inability to form new memories, e.g. Oliver Sack
s Matte of Identity about man who thought he was still working in a deli

3

septum

cluster of cells near front of thalamus in middle of brain. stimulate and experience intense pleasure.

4

left frontal lob

seems to be involved in feeling good

5

temporal lobes

when stimulated, people sometimes experience god, spiritual experiences. esp, left temporal lobe.

6

Pierre Paul Broca

named limbic system. large c-shaped fiber tracts in brain, related to emotion.
gets input from all sensory systems. smell is directly wired to limbic system; straight from amygdala.

7

James Papez

Anatomist. 1935 noticed rabies victims experienced rage before dying.
Limbic system responsible for experience and expression of emotion.

8

emotions
emotional salience

mediated by connections between limbic system and frontal lobes.
emotional salience: triggered by amygdala and transmitted to limbic system so you become emotionally aroused.

9

hypothalamus

expression of emotions. conductor of endocrine orchestra. survival center.
1. releases hormones, part of mind-body interaction
2. sends commands to autonomic nervous system
3. drives 4Fs: fight, flight, feed, sex.

10

evolutionary psychology

aka sociobiology. human traits and propensities can be attributed to natural selection.
is there a religious part of brain? why not a cooking part of brain?

11

capgras syndrome, delusion

belief that parents or close family are impostors

12

mitochondria

part of cell that supplies energy to cell

13

Alfred Russel Wallace

Contemporary of darwin who also theorized about natural selection.
Latent ability: why do we evolve ability we don't use, like ability to utter infinite sounds.

14

angular gyrus

part of parietal cortex.
in left hemisphere:when damaged, leaves people unable to do do simple math.
in right hemisphere: when damaged, disrupts artistic ability.
maybe savants, brain damage in some parts causes remapping like phantom limb patients so that angular gyrus ability is enhanced?
