final pt. II Flashcards
4 types of sensory receptors?
chemoreceptors, thermoreceptors, mechanoreceptors, photoreceptors
chemoreceptors do what?
respond to chemicals; taste& smell, blood pressure
thermoreceptors do what?
stimulated by temperature change, warmth when temperature rise, cold when temperature drops.
mechanoreceptors do what?
stimulated mechanical forces like pressure; hearing-fluid in ear that causes hearing, touch, pressure in blood vessels
photoreceptors do what?
respond to light, (two types) rods, black and white; cc cones, color vision
3 layers to the eye?
sclera (white tough) “window of eye”; choroid, where pigment is “iris” color; retina “aqueous humor” watery fluid
3 types of cone cells?
R, B, G
what is CNS?
central nervous system (brain
what is PNS?
peripheral nervous system (nerves
parts of the neuron?
dendrites, body, axon, myelin sheath
the axon does what?
carries the message away from the body
the myelin sheath is what?
white fatty insulated substance, covers axon
synapse is what?
the space between two neurons
types of peripheral nervous system
somatic and antinomic
break down of the antinomic system
sympathetic, enteric, and parasympathetic
sympathetic means
“fight or flight”
enteric means
“secretion”
parasympathetic means
“rest & digest”
functions of the lymphatic system
carries away excess tissue fluid or lymph; works with immune system to fight disease
edema is?
localized swelling
the spleen is?
made of red and white pulp, red pulp filters out old rbc, white pulp filters bacteria and debris, thin outer capsule can rupture, job can be fulfilled by other organs
the thymus gland is?
largest in childhood, shrinks as you age,
red bone marrow is?
where blood cells are formed, stem cells are formed
