final two- dating methods Flashcards
(8 cards)
absolute vs. relative dating
absolute results in concrete dates usually with error range. while relative dating results in knowing when something happened in relation to another event
radio carbon dating
40,000 ya to present organic materials only ^14C decays to ^14 N at known rate (half life is 5730)
K-Ar and Ar-Ar
Volcanic materials only, 500,000 ya at least, measure rate of which potassium turns to argon
trapped electron methods
measure the number of trapped electrons, amount of time trapped can be measured
OSL
1000 ya - 1mya, quartz and feldspar grains, determine last time that the sample was exposed to light
TL (thermoluminescence)
used to date crystalline materials, 2000-200,000 ya
paleomagnetism
based on reversal of earths magnetic field/orientation of magnetically polarized rate
faunal dating
Using the presence of fossils at a site that are known to have persisted for a given period based on data from many other sites to date the site.
