Flight Controls Flashcards

(17 cards)

1
Q

You are configuring at 4000 feet and request flaps 5. PM says flaps are stuck.

What is your priority?

Is your phase of flight relevant?

A

The number one priority is MATM.
1. Maintain Aircraft Control
2. Analyze the problem
3. Take Appropriate Action
4. Maintain Situational Awareness

Including if the Non-normal flap condition has any effect on aircraft controllability

The phase of flight is relevant. You are on approach and not in a clean configuration. You will need to execute a missed approach and coordinate for airspace to continue corrective actions.

2
Q

You have a trailing edge flap disagree on a missed approach. The holding pattern is 15nm away. Is there anything you can do during this time?

A

You can do the QRH for trailing edge flap disagree. Assess any future impact on the Non-normal (the QRH will help with this).

Q

You are doing the trailing edge flap disagree and assess there is NOT any flap asymmetry. The flaps are stuck between 2 and 5. Step 5 of the checklist directs you: Plan to extend flaps to 15 using alternate flap extension. Before you continue with this step, what are some considerations regarding impact now and in the future?

A

You need extra time to complete the alternate flap extension.
There are limitations associated with it.
Unfamiliarity with a flaps 15 landing
landing distance considerations.
Flaps extend more slowly using the alternate system, so it is recommended that pilot delay setting the new command speed until the flaps reach the selected position.

Q

As you go through the trailing edge flaps disagree non-normal, what things might you discover that may have an impact on the rest of the flight?

A
  1. Alt flap extension time to F15 is approximately 2 minutes
  2. Drag penalty with leading edge devices extended will impact fuel burn
  3. Icing considerations (ex. setting Vref ICE when you will be using engine anti ice during landing, wing anti ice was used at any point, or icing conditions were encountered during flight and field is below 10C)
  4. PWB entry of the specific non-normal
  5. 230 max airspeed limitation
  6. the need to be watchful for any flap asymmetry during alt flap extension

Q

After you have completed all the corrective actions in the trailing edge flaps disagree non-normal and you are ready for the approach, what are some other things you need to consider?

A
  1. Brake cooling
  2. communication to company (dispatch, tech ops/station ops)
  3. Communication to FAs
  4. communication to PAX
  5. logbook entry
  6. is an irregularity report/immediate notification required? yes, under SYS MALF.

Q

What does illumination of the SPEEDBRAKES EXTENDED light indicate while in flight?

A

NG/MAX: the speed brake lever is beyond the armed position, and the flap lever setting is more than flaps 10, or RA is less than 800
MAX ONLY: thrust levers are above idle with speed brake extended beyond the ARMED position.

Q

in the MAX, what does the illumination of the Assist ON light indicate?

A

The elevator jam landing assist function is activated.
If a jam occurs in the aft elevator control mechanism, both control columns have limited range of motion. During approach, the elevator jam landing assist system uses the flight spoilers for small changes to the flight path.

9
Q

What is the purpose of the Elevator Jam Landing Assist System in the MAX?

A

It assists pilots while on approach and landing during manual flight in an elevator jam condition
-when the AP is disengaged
-flaps are 1 or greater
-the elevator landing assist switch is selected ON

When active, the flight spoilers deploy to a preset position. Pushing control column causes the spoilers to extend further (increasing descent rate) and pulling causes spoilers to retract, decreasing descent rate.

Q

What does illumination of the SPEED TRIM FAIL light indicate when the MASTER CAUTION recall is activated and extinguishes when the MASTER CAUTION is reset?

Q

hat does the FEEL DIFF PRESS indicate?

A

When either hydraulic system or elevator feel pitot system falls, excessive differential hydraulic pressure is sensed in the elevator feel computer.

Q

Do not extend the flaps above what pressure altitude? Why?

A

20,000 ft to prevent excessive structural loads from increased Mach at higher altitude.

Q

What is the alternate flap duty cycle?

A

Alternate flap duty cycle in flight is one complete cycle, then five minutes off. A complete cycle is the movement from position 0 to 15 and back to 0. The ALTERNATE FLAPS position switch must be in the OFF position for 15 seconds before reversing the direction of flap movement.

Q

How do you control pitch and roll in manual reversion?

A

Ailerons and elevators in manual reversion are mechanically actuated without hydraulic assist. The stabilizer trim can be controlled electrically via the electric trim switch or manually via the stabilizer trim wheel.
