Focus Study - Thermosetting & Thermoforming Polymers Flashcards
(17 cards)
What are synthetic polymers?
Polymers that come from crude oil.
What crude-oil product makes polymers?
Naphtha
3 Types of thermoforming plastics
1 - Acrylic
2 - High-density polyethene
3 - Polyvinyl Chloride
1 Types of thermosetting plastics
1 - Epoxy resin
2 Things you can add to polymers
1 - Polymerisers - increases their flexibility
2 - Pigments to change their colour
3 Functionality / traits of Polymers
1 - They are good thermal insulators
2 - They are good electrical insulators
3 - Obtained in a wide variety on colours - add pigments - good for children’s toys
What is polymerisation?
Monomers joining together into longer molecules called polymers
Where is LDPE and HDPE used?
LDPE - plastic bags and toys
HDPE - containers
What are polymer stabilisers?
Added to polymers to reduce UV degradation and brittleness
What are extrusions
A length of a material with a consistent cross-section
What is batch production?
Small manufacture of identical products
What is a jig and what does it do?
A mechanical device to aid production and it can ;
1 - Speed up manufacturing process
2 - Reduce human error
3 - Increase consistency
BUT - Increases initial cost
What is a mass production?
The manufacture of large volumes of standadized products
What is continous production?
Continous production - takes places all year round
What is used to mark out a surface of a polymer?
A “chinagraph” pencil
What glue is glued between acrylic
Tensol cement
How does a CNC lathe work?
1 - The blank material is fitted into the lathe chuck
