Structures throughout Wildland
TRA
Temporary refuge area
Short term relief without using a fire shelter in the event egress to safety zone is compromised.
What are the structure triage categories
Non threatened
Threatened defendable- safety zone or tra present but lack of defensible space requires ff interventions
Threatened non defensible- no safety zone or tra and/or structure has challenges that don’t allow ff to safely commit to stay and defend
What are the structure protection tactical actions
Tactical evacuation
Check and go
Prep and go
Prep and defend
Fire front following
Bump and run
Anchor and hold
Tactical patrol
Check and go
Threatened non defensible, no safety zone or tra present, priority is to ensure evacuation of residents
Tactical evacuation
Fire moves too fast for law enforcement to conduct evacuations. Fire personnel switch from suppression to assist with evacuations in areas of immediate life threats
Prep and go
Threatened non defensible
Have time to safely prep the structure but cannot stay due to lack of safety zone or tra present
Prep and defend
Threatened defensible
Safety zone and tra present and adequate time to prepare structure prior to fire front arrival.
Fire front following
Insufficient time to set up ahead of fire.
Goal is to search for victims, consider permitter control, extinguish spot fires and, control hot spots and reduce ember production.
Bump and run
Move ahead to spotting zone and out our spot fires and defend as many structures as possible.
Effective in early stages
WATCH OUT SITUATION
Anchor and hold
Taking stand to stop progression of the fire.
Utilize control lines and large water streams from fixed sources to stop fire spread
Goal to extinguish structure fires, protect exposures, reduce ember production
Tactical patrol
Patrol areas down wind of potential ember showers
WUI risk management process
Step 1- Situational awareness
Step 2- Hazard assessment
Step 3- Hazard control
Step 4- Decision point
Step 5- Evaluate
Tactical engagement process PACE
Primary Plan (offensive)- focuses on ff safety
Alternate Plane (offensive)- closely resembles primary plan
Contingency Plan (defensive)- totally focuses on FF safety, move to safe place
Evacuation Plan (defensive) - survival mode
What are the levels of engagement
