Food product development stages Flashcards
(7 cards)
STEP 1- CONCEPT GENERATION
This is the thinking stage(initial) where all ideas are accepted and considered:
Develop ideas from a range of sources
Look into products that already exist
Without this stage the food product development process cannot move forward
STEP 2- CONCEPT SCREENING
All ideas are considered, some kept and others discarded:
Move from initial ideas to developed ideas
A specification can be developed
STEP 3- PROTOTYPE PRODUCTION
A prototype is an example/specimen of what the product will be like:
This prototype is measured against the specification
The product will be tested for appeal then further modified or rejected, this reduces the risk of money being wasted on unsuccessful products.
STEP 4- PRODUCT TESTING
This is the stage in which the prototype of the product can be tested on consumers:
This will gather opinions and means that the product can be further refined as a result of consumers opinions
This reduces the risk of the product not being successful within the target market.
STEP 5- FIRST PRODUCTION RUN
This allows for the first full production run of an actual item which can be assessed:
The quality assurance team can then test the product to ensure quality and uniformity of standards during the manufacturing process
Any changes must be made by this point.
STEP 6- MARKETING PLAN
This stage is the development of the range of activities to promote the product:
Where the product will be sold, position, promotion.
Initial price will also be determined by the potential marketing mix
Packaging can be finalised and taken into account.
STEP 7- LAUNCH
At this stage the product is on sale in stores:
This is important as the sales of the product must be monitored closely
Market research will provide regular feedback therefore ensuring the product can be continually refined and improved. Shows the success of the product.
