forces Flashcards
(34 cards)
what is velocity?
speed
what is acceleration?
change of velocity (speed) over time
what is force?
force is energy applied to an object to move
what is average speed?
speed=distance/time
what mass creates stronger force?
The bigger the mass of an object, the stronger the force. The smaller the mass the weaker the force.
why does gravity pull you towards the earth?
because the earth has enormous mass so creates bigger force, force wants to pull things together.
if you drop a ball on the side of the earth, where will the ball drop?
towards the center earth.
why does friction make it harder for things to slide?
friction makes it harder for things to slide because it creates a force that pushes against the direction something is moving
difference between large and small mass?
large mass have stronger force of gravity than objects with small mass
what does gravity do?
gravity pull things towards the centre of the earth
what happens if forces are unbalanced?
if forces are unbalanced the thrust will be longer
what forces is an object when its balanced?
the object when it is balanced is stationary and is at constant speed.
when forces on an object are unbalanced?
the object unbalanced is accelerating or decelerating.
all objects have what?
all objects have mass
mass is measured in what?
mass is measured in grams or kilograms
weight is the force applied to?
weight is the force applied to a mass by gravity
how does torque increase?
torque increases when force is increased and when a longer lever is used.
name 3 contact forces
thrust, friction, support
name 3 non-contact forces
magnetic, gravity, electrostatic
how does a netforce change motion?
if an object is unbalanced it has netforce because speed shape and direction are uneven
how do you calculate netforce?
you take the larger force and subtract to smaller force.
pivot
fixed place, eg place to pivot
load
object used (to do)
effort
where force is applied (like a handle)
