🏋️♂️ Forces Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is Newton’s First Law of motion?
An object stays at rest or in constant motion unless acted on by a resultant force.
What is meant by the term “resultant force”?
A single force that represents the combined effect of all forces acting on an object.
What is the equation for calculating weight?
Weight = mass × gravitational field strength (N = kg × N/kg)
Define moment and give its unit.
The turning effect of a force around a pivot. Moment = force × distance from pivot (Nm)
What factors affect braking distance?
Road conditions, brake condition, tyre quality, and vehicle speed.
What is terminal velocity and how does it occur?
It’s the maximum speed of a falling object when weight is balanced by air resistance.
How does a lever make lifting easier?
It increases the distance from the pivot, increasing the moment produced by the same force.
What does Hooke’s Law state?
The extension of a spring is directly proportional to the force applied, up to the limit of proportionality (plastic deformation)
Why does atmospheric pressure decrease with altitude?
Fewer air particles are above you, so there’s less weight and less pressure.
How is pressure in a liquid calculated?
Pressure = height × density × gravitational field strength (Pa = m × kg/m³ × N/kg)
