Forces and shape Flashcards
(13 cards)
Describe 3 effects a force may have?
1) change in speed
2) change in shape
3) change in direction
Name different types of forces?
Gravitational
Electrostatic
Reaction force
Thrust
Drag
Lift
Tennsion
What is the difference between a vector quantity and a scaler quantity?
Vector quantity has direction scaler has no direction.
Why is force a vector quantity?
Because it has direction as well as magnitude
What will happen if the forces on an object a balanced?
It will either stay still or if it’s already moving, it will carry on at the same velocity.
What will happen if the forces on an object or unbalanced?
The object will accelerating that direction, this may be starting, stopping, speeding up, slowing down or changing direction.
What is friction?
Friction is a force that opposes motion.
What is the relationship between weight, mass, and gravitational field strenght?
Weight = mass X gravitational field strenght.
W = M x G
What makes up the stopping distance of a vehicle?
The sum of thinking distance and breaking distance
What other factors effect vehicle stopping distance?
Speed
Mass
Road condition
Reaction time
What is Hooke’s law?
Hooke’s Law says that extension is proportional to force.
When does Hooke’s law stop working?
When elastic limit has been reached.
What is elastic behaviour?
The ability of a material to recover its original shape.
