Forces and their Interactions Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is interaction?
When two objects influence each other and cause a pair of forces to arise.
Like clapping hands
What do forces cause?
Forces can cause change
Eg Kicking a football, change in speed, direction and shape!
Examples of force effects?
- Change in speed
- Change in direction
- Change in shape
What is the difference between contact and non-contact forces?
Contact forces happen when two things are touching.
Non-contact forces happen when objects don’t touch.
Examples of contact forces?
- thrust
- friction
- air resistance
- water resistance
- normal contact
- upthrust
Examples of non-contact forces?
- gravity force
- magnetic force
Free body force diagram
What kind of forces are shown?
- Upthrust (contact)
- Gravity (non-contact)
Arrows show the size + direction of forces. Same size? Boat stays level
What is each force acting on? (The object)
The boat!
What is causing each force?
- Water (up)
- Gravity (down)
What is compression?
Two pushing forces cause compression - like squeezing a balloon
What is tension?
Two pulling forces - like stretching an elastic band
