Friction Flashcards
(8 cards)
What is friction?
A force that resists movement between two touching surfaces.
When does friction happen?
When an object slides or tries to slide over another surface.
Where does friction act?
Between solid surfaces that are in contact.
In which direction does friction act?
Opposite to the direction of motion or the force trying to move the object.
Why does friction occur?
Because surfaces are rough, and their tiny bumps catch on each other.
What must happen for an object to start sliding?
The pushing or pulling force must be greater than the friction force.
Is friction always bad?
No – it can be useful (like helping shoes grip the ground).
Can friction create heat?
Yes – rubbing surfaces together transfers energy and causes warming.
