Forces of a structure Flashcards

1
Q

WHAT IS A FORCE?

A

Pushing or pulling that will move the object

unless it is opposed by another equal and opposite force.

forces are important bc they can affect the overall stabillity of the structure and can determain what needs to be changed about the structer

A force may be defined as any push or pull on an object that will result in movement of the object unless it is opposed by another equal and opposite force.

UNITS OF FORCE

A

Newtons in the unit of force

The standard SI unit of force is called a Newton (N). To give you an example of the magnitude, think of one newton (1N) as being the force to lift a D battery and ten newtons (10N) as being the force to lift a 1L carton of milk.

Q

FORCES IN STRUCTURES

A

In some cases, forces can be divided into two general categories - live load and dead load.

Live Load - if snow/ other natural things and items inside the house will cause it to sag/move or be instable

includes the force of wind and the weight of things that are actually within the structure (people, furniture, snow on roof)

Dead Load -
are perminent item that are part of the structure that will cause it to sag or effect it in someway overtime

refers to the actual weight of the structure itself. THis force can cause a structure to sag, tilt, or even pull apart over time.
