Gaining Allies
Treaty of Medina del Campo between England and Spain, Arthur would marry Catherine of Aragon and her dowry would be 200,000 crowns. Marriage of Princess Margaret and James IV of Scotland. Intercursus Magnus, helped relations with Burgundy.
Improving trade
Intercursus Magnus, the major commercial treaty between England and the Duchy of Burgundy which restored normal trading links between the two. 1496
Avoiding War
Signing the treaty of Etaples in 1492, France had to pay England £5000 a year. Anglo-French truce in 1488.
Securing the Tudor dynasty
Arthur marries Catherine of Aragon. Their children would secure the dynasty. He also married Elizabeth of York and produced an heir. In 1503 Princess Margaret married James IV of Scotland.
How did Henry achieve National Security?
1497, Truce of Ayton between England and Scotland. After the execution of Warbeck this became a full peace treaty. Anglo-French truce in 1488.
How was Italy (not) a threat?
Another country opposing England could occupy it. Geographically far away, not much to do with each other
What was evidence Burgundy was/was not a threat?
Had control over important trades, so was important for wealth. Valuable cloth trade between the two countries.
What was evidence Spain was not a threat?
An alliance was needed.
What was evidence Scotland was/was not a threat?
Alliance with France. Little more than arguments about the border.
What was evidence France was a threat?
Close proximity to England, alliance with Scotland which shared a border with England.
What was evidence that Brittany was/was not a threat?
France occupied Brittany, threatening England’s security along the south coast. Henry spent time in Brittany before taking the throne.
