Forestry: 3_Forest Management Flashcards
(15 cards)
What is Clearcut Harvest?
A timber harvesting method that removes all merchantable trees from a specific area at the same time.
What is Partial Cut Harvest?
Timber harvesting systems where the initial harvest does not remove all merchantable trees from any unit of land, intended to encourage natural regeneration.
What is the Selection Method?
A partial cut method used in uneven-aged stands, harvesting selected trees individually or in small groups periodically, suitable for shade-tolerant species.
What is the Shelterwood Method?
A partial cut method harvesting mature trees in multiple cuttings to allow seedling establishment and early growth under partial shade.
What is the Seed Tree Method?
A partial cut method leaving individual trees or groups of trees uncut to provide seed for regeneration of the harvested area.
What is Sustainable Forest Management (SFM)?
Practices that ensure the sustainable harvesting and regeneration of forests to maintain their environmental, economic, social, and cultural health for future generations.
What is Regeneration?
The process of renewing forest growth after harvesting, either through planting or natural seeding.
What is Strategic Harvesting?
Carefully planned and controlled harvesting operations designed to mimic natural processes like fire while minimizing risks and maximizing benefits.
What are Buffer Zones?
Areas of land left undisturbed around important features like wetlands, rivers, sensitive wildlife habitat, and sites of cultural importance during harvesting operations.
What is an Urban Forest?
The collection of trees and other vegetation within an urban area, including those in parks, along streets, and on private property.
What is the Urban Heat Island Effect?
The phenomenon where urban areas are significantly warmer than surrounding rural areas due to heat absorption by buildings, pavement, and lack of vegetation.
What is Stormwater Runoff?
Water that flows over the ground surface after precipitation, which can be managed by urban forests that absorb and filter water.
What is Monoculture?
The cultivation or growth of a single species of plant or tree in a specific area, which can make the area more vulnerable to pests and diseases.
What is Community Resilience?
The ability of a community to withstand and recover from shocks and stresses, such as those caused by climate change, which urban forests can help enhance.
What is Windthrow?
Trees being blown down by wind, a concern in partial cut systems where residual trees are left standing.
